Welcome to our 2019 $500 Halloween Horror 50 Word Story Contest. Yes, that’s right. It’s already here. Every year we run our contests, and those of you who have been frequent readers, this is what you’ve been waiting for.
First we will be doing a print issue! We will be doing 2 print issues, and we will pick entries from this contest to be in our issue. If you had a 50 word story designated to be in our print issue, from a past contest, please contact us.
Second, we will be giving out a $500 reward for the best 50 word horror story. This is not easy for us. Every Writer is not doing as well as it did in the past, but we want your stories. I believe writers should get paid for their work. I wish we could pay all of our writers, but it’s just impossible. So $500 for 50 words, I think is a unique and valuable statement to our readers. Ten dollars a word is what all writers really deserve.
So here are the rules:
• Story must be scary
• Story must be 50 words
• Story must be original and your own
• Story may not be published elsewhere
• Story must have a title (does NOT count in word count)
• Deadline is October 25, 2019
• Enter as many times as you want
• Story must be written in the comments below!
• Be nice or be disqualified
I love these stories. This is one of favorite traditions of Every Writer. I look forward to this every year, and this year I have extended the time we are going to spend with the contest.
The winners will:
• Be announced on October 31, 2019
• Will get $500
• Will be published in our digital and print issue.
• Will get an author page on our site
There is no entry fee for this contest. It would help us out greatly if you would donate 1$ or more, if you can, to help out the site. We would really appreciate it. A donation will not be considered in the deciding this contest.
If you want to keep up with me on Twitter, please follow me at @everywriter, I follow back all writers.
Good luck, and let the writing begin.
HERE IS THE WINNER
I have picked 4 stories. They all have times and days on them. If the winner does not respond by Friday 11/22/19 the money will go to the next story on the list. Here are the top 4 stories in order. She heard mushy sounds for days and suffered from unbearable itchiness.

That night while she slept, the creature returned.
And finding the eggs missing, it laid more.

Secondhand Doll

Alexander Daley Escobedo 10/25/19 3:38pm
Heirloom
We Buried my brother today. Suicide. He thought something evil was haunting him. He’d been medicated, institutionalized, shocked and secluded. He found his own way out. I wish I could tell him I’m sorry. Or had listened more closely. Because, when I got home, it was on my couch. Laughing.

TITLE: RESEVOIR
We should have known something was wrong when we first tasted the water. It was a little brown, but no more than usual in this apartment complex.
We kept drinking it until it turned black.
When they opened the water tank, they found the bloated, rotting corpse of my neighbor.
We usually always contact the winners first, but after all the trouble, we are opening up the process. I am again, very sorry for how late this is. I did not expect 4000 stories. Next year I will be ready.

Sad Clown:
I saw a clown on the carousel.

TENT FOR TWO

Don’t Show Fear
Creepy, crawly, ugly worms are everywhere. The dead don’t fear the worms because they are already dead.
What if you’re dying and you see the worms crawling over your body? Scared? Frightened? Shaking? Just keep in mind worms eat faster if they sense you are afraid. So, don’t show fear.
Mahalakshmi says
I AM DEAD
Coming to a different place…
Seeing something that I shouldn’t want to see.
Looking for some light and sunshine…
Nothing came…
Because I am dead…
Now, I saw that I didn’t exist
Trying to move I don’t have a body…
God is staring at me but, I am in hell…..
Mahalakshmi says
THOUGHTS COME TRUE
Writing my thoughts.
I wrote a story of a dead person…
Looking behind I saw that person staring at me…
He is asking why you remember me?
Frightened by him I closed my eyes…
Suddenly, he got my hand and wrote another name
and that person came real…

Playing
My dog can play fetch for hours. Australian Shepherds are a hyper breed, after all. People compliment on how beautiful her red coat is. Thing is she used to be completely white. Silly thing keeps bringing the bodies I throw out back to me. Ah well, She’s a good girl.

COLLIDING BELIEFS
“The energy’s way off the charts…” said the technician.
“Can we contain it?” queried the scientist.
“We don’t have the tech, or the time.”
“How long ‘til critical?”
“Six days, six hours, and six minutes before total engulfment.”
The CERN lab became inundated by a flood of short notice vacations.

HEART STRINGS
The puppeteer is tugging at my heart strings.
Tugging fast, my heart races.
Tugging slow, it barely thumps.
Pulling tight sends sharpness shooting through me.
It makes me cry.
He sees my pain, asks if I want to cut the strings.
I say no.
My heart won’t beat without them.

CAREFUL WHAT YOU WITCH FOR
Sarah hung clothes.
The minister, hidden in shadow, watched. Holy Bible clutched in trembling hands.
There! On her left ear lobe.
“The devil’s mark.”
Villagers gathered at the gallows.
“Any last words?”
Sarah mumbled.
Blood gushed from the executioner’s mouth. The minister burst into flames. Villagers shrieked.
Crumbling to dust.

BLANKET
Blanket follows me everywhere.
I try to move, distract myself, but it always finds me.
It’s soft.
And heavy.
Suffocation veiled in comfort.
When I can’t run anymore it covers me.
I hate how easy it is to stop fighting.
Every time is longer.
… One day I won’t get up…

THE ROSE-BACK GHOST
A tortured man crept into the old house and chastised secret sins.
Threshing himself with brambles, his spine wept from thorny inoculations and he died in a septic fit.
Some say, the sullen specter still haunts the abandoned cloister, periodically lashing out at unwary visitors in the dead of night.
Marcelle Neumann says
She Was Only Five
I killed the girl a year ago on my birthday. Her mother stared at the broken whiskey bottle and deflated balloons among the wreckage. The pure hatred in her eyes unnerved me.
The letter I found in my car today had only four words.
Happy Birthday. You’re Dead!
Wendy Montoya says
Temper:
Alison lounged on my bed snooping through my photo album as i dressed for the Halloween dance,
“So. where’s your dad” she asked with a sheepish grin.
I rolled my eyes, but answered “he’s still at the station; apparently they still haven’t caught him!” I round the corner of my bathroom just as she shivered I grinned in pleasure. She was on my last nerve, but I knew I had to keep my temper in check.
Nice costume she snorted jumping up from my bed to put her boots back on.
“seriously though, are you really going as red riding hood?” she seethed.
I felt the jolt as the heat of the hunger rises from my belly I hunched over, it was to late … “Ania, wake up!” my father shook me in panic. My eyes fluttered open.
My Father jumped to his feet ran his fingers through his hair as he paced in panic.
“This has to stop Ania!!” he growled in anger. I sat up slowly,
“What did I do?” I snapped, He froze in place then pointed, my eyes flickered to the window was splattered with thick fresh blood my eyes followed as it slithered down to the baseboards and I grimaced when I saw poor Alison in pieces … “whoops!” I said glancing back up at my father.

PERSONNEL HANG-UPS
He couldn’t bear lies.
“…dropped the Stinson account.” came whispers.
Actually; he wouldn’t do after-hour services for the boss, the family man, the paragon.
And when the executive was found dangling out the window; rope around his neck and meat-hook in the caboose, subtle variations of the truth held sway.
Kit Steward says
TRAVELING COMPANIONS
The train excited Nessa, but she loathed her mysterious riding companion.
“No matter, it’s a short trip,” she thought.
As the tunnel drew close, so did he.
Much closer…
A loud whistle screamed.

Kit Steward says
THE PENDULOUS BRANCH
The young woman, fearful of discovery, cowered in a hollow bough.
Her racing heart was choked, through the cords of a taut rope.
One, by one, by one, the townsfolk’s wicked sins were metered in midnight inquisitions.
And the nightly cries from witch’s willow wound down until heard no more.
Kit Steward says
OLD GEORGE
Geese honked in the distant sky.
The primed 12-gauge had rusted.
He lay hidden in the glint of tall fall grass, the lone greeter of early dawn.
His flesh cold, limbs numbed.
How long he’d rested prone was irrelevant. “Season” was over.
And there he’d remain, forever awash in peace.
Christopher Derr says
THE SPELL
I am back in my home. There is a knock at my door.

And I will never answer that knock, not for all the world.

Soon 1000 lifeless specters will consume my very soul.
Run!

I SAW HER STANDING FROM THE WINDOW OF THE TRAIN
Stone still. Red hair in loose curls covering her bare chest.
The train trundled past billowing wisps of morning fog draping her in gossamer robes.
She must be cold.
She waived, empty black eyes beckoning.
My mistake? Waiving back.
We ride in silence. Her cold dead hand laced with mine.

Michelle’s mother was devastated. Her father was happy she moved out.

MAKE GOOD CHOICES
Orange entrails smear across Bob’s paralyzed body while his head rests on what’s left of a sand-soaked gourd. Searing pain engulfs him as fire ants march across his scalp, over his eyes, and up his nose. Unrelenting stings ignite an inferno in his mind, Never do Halloween in Death Valley.
Sakshi says
The living dead night
It was pitch dark,
The night was spooky
Steps haunting the stairs,
My hands trembling the Ominous
I opened the door,
The outfit blowing in the air
To utter surprise it was a black outfit,
without a face on it
I trembled,
and closed
the door at a pitch dark midnight.

LOCKED
I am trapped inside my head. I hear screams, my thoughts resonate too loud, and they are me. I struggle with pain, and guilt, and terror, and it is all me. I am claustrophobic, and I am trapped inside. Alone.
You can’t escape when you’re the monster under your bed.
Myra Rubinstein says
Long Night of the Dutiful Daughter
Mom raised me to do as I was told.
The last time I saw, Mom was at the Memory Care. The last time I heard, Mom was in her chair, hands under the blanket. “Put your head in my lap once more, my child.”
The silent night will never end.

Sign on the Door
The sign says “OPEN MAIL SLOT FOR CANDY.”
So I crouch at the door, and with a lollypop, open the mail slot. I inch my lollypop further inside — CHOMP — it disappears from my trembling fingers. “Come on up!” I yell to the rest of the trick-or-treaters. “There’s candy in there!”

Not What It Seems.
Walking down the street I hear a kitten meowing from under a car.
Finding the kitten it hissed & runs, but keeps meowing in distress.
Following it, it leads me into a dark alleyway.
Chills run down my spine as hot breath & claws wrap around at the back of my neck.
Ivan Vulic says
Biggest fear
Thunder cracked the sky as the rain was pouring. I turned on the light, waiting for my fear, what I’m most affraid of. My heart was pounding as the smell of mold filled the air. I knew the time is now, so I opened my eyes and looked at mirror.

I Want to Suck Your Blood!
Dracula flew into town on a dark and creepy night. ‘Twas hungered for some human blood. He dug his fangs into a slender neck and sucked out the oozing red potion. There was no more life left in her. Satisfied he flew back home on this dark and creepy night.
Priscilla Dunn says
Halloween
It was a dark and spooky night,
The streets birthed denizens of fright,
From above a witch swooped down
And landed in the light.
She cackled loud with glee,
As she stood in front of me,
She weaved a spell, I croaked and fell,
Then she soared off wild and free.

A Witch’s Brew
There is a full moon…the wicked witches fly the sky with spooky cackling sounds. Riding broomsticks in a bloodthirsty club that tends to haunt the town. Their potions from an eye of newt and human brew taste so good tonight, that witches never think to end this awesome eerie fright.

The Chocobolo
Staring ahead into the darkness, she sees a gleam. A pair of shining eyes, piercing, chilling. Slowly, it creeps. One foot steps into the light, then the other, both gnarled and twisted. The feet give way to sharpened talons. The head emerges, a bloodthirsty grin smeared across the ghastly face.

Room Service
Her shift at the hotel was hauntingly long tonight. The man in room 101 called for room service around 12:05am. She tiredly pushed the cart down the hall until she reached his door. “Room Service!” When he answered, she stabbed him in the chest and stuffed him in the cart.

What Lurks in the Darkness
It. The thing. Whatever you want to call it. It is there. There in the closet. My closet. I can feel it. Its presence, its sickly aura, permeating the air that is becoming more stifling every second. I am frozen and helpless. The closet door, creaking, so slowly, almost imperceptible…opens.

Who’s There?
She was alone. And her imagination was getting the best of her. It was not a good combination. She heard a thump. Its just the neighbors, she thought. I’m safe, I have nothing to worry about. Another noise, this time louder. She couldn’t deny what she heard next. “Help me”.

Don’t Tell a Soul
“It was you! How could I have not known?! I.. I don’t even know what to say.” Resigned, Carla collapses onto the chair, hands covering her tear soaked face. Michael comes to her side and whispers in her ear, “Darling, you know I had to kill that wretched old bat.”

Charred Mirror
“Three Dead in Fire. Only Survivor Later Dies in Hospital” Scott was only skimming the headlining story until something caught his attention. It was the first picture. Something wasn’t quite right in the photo of the victims. Scott’s breath caught in his chest as he recognized himself on the page.

Arachnophobia
Tory’s arm started to itch. She looked at where she was scratching and saw thick black hairs rapidly growing out of her skin. Horrified, she stumbled backward. The same was happening to her other arm! Suddenly four hairy legs sprouted from her hips. In her place stood a goliath tarantula.

Never Look Back
Lucie stumbled out of the forest. She ran, tripping over her feet, toward her car. As she ran, Lucie tried to pull her keys out of her pocket but dropped them. Frantically she bent down to grab them, nearly falling. Lucie turned back to the car. She never reached it.

Time for Supper
It was an immense beast of a thing, almost impressive if not for being utterly terrifying. Towering over my defenseless body, the beast leaned its snarling, fanged face down to meet mine, its putrid breath traveling into my nostrils. I shut my eyes as it stretched its mouth open wider.

Another Shot of Novocain Please
“I’m sorry to tell you Miss, but we weren’t able to save your left hand.” Coming out of the anesthetic state, I was confused and looked down at my hand, but instead saw a bloody stump in its place. “But… my wisdom teeth…” I stared in horror at the dentist.

Beware!
It was dark, gloomy, and raining, nonstop. No one walked the grounds of the cemetery this night. You ask why? You should not ask why because you know why. The Halloween demons are everywhere, especially in the cemetery. If you enter the cemetery tonight, you won’t leave it alive. Beware!

DON’T LOOK UP, YOU’RE NEXT
A drip—I startle awake.
Where is he? That hot date?
The bed is empty. Icy.
Don’t touch the light.
Get the knife from under the mattress—It’s gone.
Drip …

My toes cling to kitchen tiles. They should not be wet.
Drip … hits my skull.
