  1. Many thanks for your article. As a writer of children’s stories I have been recently doing much the same sort of search as you; I came up with CRICKET Magazine, and have since submitted a story. I write for 8-11 year-old children, so am hoping to connect with a few of the magazines you have listed.

I wish to mention another magazine, one that I know very well, having submitted material for the last 14 years. I’d say it’s almost on a par with CRICKET. THE SCHOOL MAGAZINE is produced by the Department of Education & Training of New South Wales, Australia. It comprises four magazines, and comes out each month, February to November, a magazine for students in Year 3, one for Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6. There are no ads, just stories, plays, poetry, book reviews, a few jokes, student feedback, the odd article on something or other, as well as graphic/comic stories in serial form. They accept unsolicited submissions worldwide! High quality all of the way and pay their writers well, e.g. for a 1750 word story I receive around $470, Australian. My only fault, and I can’t back it up, is that the MAG may be unconsciously restricted in what it publishes due to being aligned with that sometimes very restricting word, ‘education’. An example: I submitted what I thought to be a great birthday party game for boys, 8 years to 11, a game to played under supervision at home. ‘The Elastic or Rubber Band Fight’. Both teams hiding behind spindle-backed chairs, about 7 metres apart. All wearing protective eye gear. Armed to the teeth with elastic bands. Able to shoot their bands with the help of a wooden ruler or just with their fingers. A truce called at half time so that ammo may be collected from No-Man’s Land, and then the game continued. They knocked it back. The Editor said, “One of the editorial panel commented, ‘What would the Mothers think!’ I thought, ‘I wonder what the Dads would have thought?’ Meanwhile, the Department of Education still struggling to find out why boys don’t do so well in school. Hmmm.
Anyway, all the best. And here’s hoping your kids’ birthday party elastic band games/wars are a success. I did it the last day of school with my Year 1-3 class afew years back. The principal opened the classroom door to see what all the noise was about. We suddenly stopped playing. It was me and the girls against the boys. We looked up at him, all wearing our goggles. One kid had a face mask and snorkle. There was silence. Then he closed the door and went away and we continued. Nothing was ever mentioned …

  2. Hi, I realise this post is a couple of years old now, but I wondered whether you’d consider our magazine, Storytime? We publish in the UK and have a strict no-ads policy. We are a monthly illustrated story magazine and every issue features six stories and one or two poems. We often include extracts from classic books, as well as stories, myths, legends and folk tales from all over the world. We ship subscriptions worldwide and also have a digital edition. Though we aren’t able to accept submissions at the moment, we are hoping to in future. Thanks and best wishes from the Storytime team at http://www.storytimemagazine.com
