  1. I think a cruise could be both productive and inspiring if in the company of like-minded writers. Playing “what-if” to generate ideas. Sharing tips about process or things tried that work Or don’t work. I think a week or even 4 days on a writer’s cruise could boost productivity.

    Just my two cents.

  2. Linda,

I agree. I should add this to the article! I think anywhere you take a group of writers, in general, it helps you stay on with writing. I think a group pushes you more than anything else. A writers group on a cruise would be a great idea and so much fun.

  3. As an alternative to a cruise, a writer seeking somewhere without any distractions but with another writer to talk to could visit deepriverwritersretreat.com.au. Located on the remote south coast of Western Australia it would be harder to get further away from the rest of the world. It is not a commercial operation, being run by a writer who just likes the company of others with a similar interest. Check it out if you want somewhere to inspire you to write.

  4. I am organizing a cruise for writers of nautical historical fiction, which is one of my platforms and interests. A cruise is potentially an ideal setting for a writers retreat unless you are a boozer and a party-er. Seriously! What better place to organize yourself than on a boat at sea? Stay away from the discos, the midnight buffet, the ice cream bar. Sit in your expensive room and write! Oh, and read my satire about a cruise ship nurse in outer space: Holiday on Planet Jolieterre. It’s an electronic short story available through Amazon, B&N, Smashwords.

  5. I took a cruise in 2010 with the intention of getting some writing done. It just didn’t happen. There was too much going on, too many diversions, and since I tend to be easily distracted, well….it just didn’t work of for me, even though I had writing friends with me. We were all weak. However, I didn’t feel guilty about it. I had fun, relaxed, and wrote intensely when I got back to my kitchen table. It’s not a good idea in general.

  6. Linda, if you are interested in getting other writers, from our site to take the cruise go ahead and post a link to your site or any information about it. I would be happy to pass it around. We are in month 7 of winter here in the mid-west, and cruise sounds like heaven these days….

  7. I’ve actually gotten a lot of writing done on ocean cruises. River cruises are harder. And the fact that you don’t have to worry about cooking and cleaning really frees up a chunk of time for writing.
