Comparing the two dedications, I would say that not only did Mark Twain quite intentionally and casually steal the dedication by simply substituting several synonyms within the lines, in the order he found them, but then he lied about it in the speech, fabricating a story which makes it seem as though it had been unconscious plagiarism. I would suggest reading “Mark Twain: Newspaper Reading and the Writer’s Creativity,” by Edgar M. Branch. in “Nineteenth-Century Fiction,” Vol. 37, No. 4 (Mar., 1983), pp. 576-603, which can be found on JSTOR.
