Yes, we do cheesy lists sometimes. Sometimes we are down with being helpful and informative, but sometimes we are fun and cheesy….
1. Because some day literary magazines will rule the world…
Some day, when all the print magazines have died, the only magazines that will still be publishing are literary magazines. This is because the no one will be able to make a profit on magazines and the only people who publish a magazine without making a profit are literary magazines editors/lovers of writing.
2. They Make you Cool (or uncool depending)
Literary magazines are one of the most labeling media out there. Think of all the magazines that are so non-descriptive about people who read them. Like Newsweek or Time (no telling who reads those) or Car and Driver or even Wired. Those magazines have varied and wide audiences. Their readers are could love mangoes or motorcycles, it’s almost impossible to tell, but if you see a guy carring a copy of Tin House or The Paris Review that’s saying something about his character…
3. Loud and quiet at the same time
Literary magazines have the ability to impress with loud art, stories and poetry while still flying under people’s radar.
4. No drama
You don’t see literary magazine editors in the news trying to do a hostile take over of another media outlet.
5. Love of the game
You’ll never hear a literary magazine editor yelling “Show me the money,” to his agent.
6. Reading a good literary magazine is like taking psychedelic drugs
Pictures, poetry about death, poetry about life, poetry about sex, short story, article on global warming….
7. Down to earth
There are no literary magazine editors on Celebrity Rehab.
8. Define fame
Lit mag editors are famous among other lit mag editors and some readers. They all look up to each other while they are criticizing the last issue…
9. Diversity
The best lit mag editors do not live in New York or LA.
10. In the end
Literary magazines are for lit lovers and writers, and we think writers are the best people.
11. Long History
and of course literary magazines have a long history of being awesome before we even defined the term.
