Dear Editors,
We need your help for an upcoming article here on EWR. We would like to hear from you. We want to know what you look for in submissions. To kick of the process of writing this article, we are asking this poll.
It is for editors and writers of course (anyone can vote).
What do you as a editor (or do you think editors) want most in a submissions (poetry or fiction)? Please chime in on the comments and let me know what you think, if you are an editor, feel free to plug your magazine.
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
Nathan Alan Schwartz says
There are many things that our editors look for. But one of the most important things is following the submission guidelines(as far as technically goes) Far too many times do we come across submitters who submit incorrectly. Also we look for submissions that are unique and don’t necessarily follow strict poetic or literary rules by the book. We want authors to have unique voices.

I would have to agree with others here that we want to see both a professional presentation and adherence to submission guidelines. Beyond that, strong characters and or a unique perspective will get our attention. We are a fiction magazine that publishes poetry, short fiction and art. The same sparkly vampire bit or shock flash fiction peppered with expletives won’t pique our interest.

I agree that following submission guidelines has to be one of the biggest issues we have at EWR. We only publish flash fiction on our short stories site 500 words or less. I get 20 submissions per month that are far far beyond that limit.
Note: I forgot to add that editors who post here, I will most likely contact you by email to be part of the article for EWR. I hope that’s ok.
