URL Information about your company. Milkweed Editions is an independent, nonprofit publisher that has been bringing meaningful ideas and voices into the world since 1979. We are based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and publish across categories including literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, poetry, essays, young adult fiction, children’s literature, and select translations.
As an independent press, we aim to give voice to emerging and marginalized authors and to publish books that make an impact. We release 15-20 new titles per year and have published over 400 books to date. Our books have won numerous awards, including the National Book Award, Lambda Literary Award, Minnesota Book Award, and more.
At Milkweed, we see literature as a powerful agent of change in society. We seek out authors with fresh perspectives writing on important issues. As a nonprofit, we are driven by our mission rather than commercial motivations. We believe that literature broadens our horizons and helps us understand each other.
We are distributed by Consortium Book Sales and Distribution, with titles represented globally including in chain and independent bookstores, libraries, schools, and online retailers. Milkweed authors have access to our in-house publicity, marketing, and events teams who work diligently to bring books to readers.
Submissions We accept query letters for new book-length works during our reading periods, from March 15-May 15 and August 15-October 15 each year. We prioritize works by authors from historically marginalized groups including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled voices. We publish debut authors but also have a strong reputation for publishing award-winning, career-spanning authors.
What do you publish? Fiction, narrative nonfiction, poetry, young adult novels, children’s picture books – generally 15-20 titles annually across categories.
