About the Publisher
In 1971, an extraordinary partnership between poet Susan Polis Schutz and her husband, physicist-turned-illustrator Stephen Schutz, gave birth to Blue Mountain Arts in Boulder, Colorado. Leaving their East Coast roots behind, the young couple transformed their apartment basement into a creative workshop where they produced hand-silkscreened posters combining Susan’s heartfelt poetry with Stephen’s ethereal artwork. Their unconventional business approach – traveling across the country in a pickup truck with a camper, selling their artistic creations – resonated deeply with people who encountered their work. The authentic emotional depth of Susan’s verses paired with the dream-like quality of Stephen’s illustrations created an immediate connection with audiences.
What started as a love-driven artistic venture evolved into a global publishing phenomenon that has maintained its founding principles for over five decades. The company’s distinctive style, characterized by rich ink saturation, vibrant color palettes, and premium paper selection, has become their hallmark in the greeting card and gift market. Their success led to international expansion, with their products now translated into twelve languages including Japanese, French, German, and Hebrew. The impact of their artistic collaboration is perhaps best exemplified by Susan’s book “To My Daughter with Love on the Important Things in Life,” illustrated by Stephen, which has sold more than 1.8 million copies. Through all their growth and success, Blue Mountain Arts has remained true to its core mission: helping people express their deepest emotions and strengthen their connections with loved ones.
