From the Editor
Spadina Literary Review is an online literary magazine based in Toronto, Canada, with an international readership. The magazine was launched in 2011 and after a few years of irregular appearances is now publishing every two months.
We are open to submissions of short fiction (600-3,200 words), poetry, short non-fiction, and comics from anywhere on the planet. The writing guidelines are accessible from the Contact page.
We like writing that is comprehensible to most readers — not academic, therefore, but still at a cultivated level. Intrigue and suspense writing is especially welcome, as is humor.
Most editions contain a significant amount of original artwork, generally provided by staff. Art and photographic work from non-staff contributors is welcome and is usually credited in cutlines accompanying the art.
For the past couple years we have been able to include one or two pages of comics in each edition.
The Spadina Literary Review is not in a position to pay contributors at this stage, although it is our long-term ambition to at least provide token compensation. In the meantime we are glad to point readers to our contributors’ professional websites or book publications. We ask contributors to do what suits their interests and/or feelings with regard to any material they wish to share.
If you choose to appear in the Spadina Literary Review, you retain copyright for all subsequent use or purposes.

Submissions
We like poetry that is comprehensible to most readers — as opposed to, for example, poems written in personal code, if you get what we mean.
We like to give each poem its own page, which also means the poem should be substantial enough to look good on a page. So nothing shorter than a sonnet, please. However, a sequence of shorties linked by a common theme might be suitable.
In the matter of fiction, humor is especially welcome, but so are suspense and intrigue. We are also interested in stories that are longer than our stated upper word limit but that can be divided at appropriate suspense points so as to be continued on a serial basis.
We have a couple nonfiction categories:
The “Memoir” category seeks an interesting, 100%-true episode from your life. 1,200-2,400 words. The emphasis is on episode, as distinct from a whole life story.
The “Pensées” category is looking for your composed thoughts on any subject under the sun presented in interesting, non-academic fashion. 1,200-2,400 words.
We might be interested in other categories of nonfiction — environmentalist writing, just to pick an example out of the blue. However, for any work that involves significant levels of labor and research, your best bet is to query the editor first.
Finally, we also seek artwork and comics.
