From the editor
n+1 is a print magazine of politics, literature, and culture published three times yearly.
From the site:
n+1 was founded in New York City in 2004 by six young writers and editors who wanted to revive the American tradition of politically engaged literary magazines. At the time, the intellectual scene felt disturbingly fragmented and drained of vitality: political magazines didn’t care about literature, literary magazines didn’t discuss politics, and big ideas had to be buried in tiny book reviews. The founding editors wanted to make a magazine that could encompass all the subjects they cared about—one that didn’t shy away from difficult and ambitious writing, and that saw literature, politics, and culture as aspects of the same project.
Submissions
Writers interested in contributing to n+1 should note that we come out only three times each year, and that most if not all of the slots available for a given issue will have been filled by the editors many months before publication. That said, if you would like to brave the odds, the best submissions guidelines are those implied by the magazine itself. Read an issue or two through to get a sense of whether your piece might fit into n+1. Nonfiction authors, please send a query outlining your argument, or, better yet, the first 500-1000 words of your proposed piece, to editors@nplusonemag.com. Please also attach two or three samples of your work. We do our best to answer all queries promptly. We are a literary magazine but we are interested above all in reports from all the various fields of human endeavor: medicine, computing, the law, sports, crime, art, finance, engineering, construction, music, etc. Please tell us and our readers what we do not know. We do not publish interviews with living authors or appreciations of dead authors, filmmakers, artists, et cetera. Fiction writers should submit work to fiction@nplusonemag.com. Please attach three short stories or the manuscript of a story collection or novel, noting which portions of the submitted work, if any, have been published or accepted for publication elsewhere. We want to have a sense of your fiction as a whole, as well as to know what part of your work we can consider publishing ourselves. Like all other magazines, we would like to be the first to publish your work, not the third or eighth. n+1 does not accept unsolicited poetry at this time.
