From the Editor
Big Fiction celebrates the soul of the long story: generous, transportive, and a little wild. We’re an independent journal publishing ambitious and delicious fiction twice a year, in hand-designed letterpress issues.
BIG FICTION provides a home for the novelette, that long form fiction that needs more breath than a short story. We are also a home for essays, those experiments of curiosity and self-awareness that examine the lies that we believe in, consciously or not. We are housed proudly online.
Long form prose is magic. It meanders, but it also takes aim. It accumulates just as it refines its full breadth into a singular nugget. It hangs out and makes a good mess of itself. It can encompass entire lifetimes — marriages, deaths, betrayals, redemptions — in its sweep.
Submissions
?We have two submission periods: our fall and spring cycle. Dates may vary, but we will always keep the most current open submission dates in our “What’s the Big Deal?” section of our home page.
?We accept fiction and essays: fiction in any genre (except children’s and YA) with a clear literary intent, and essays as narratively straightforward or as experimental as you envision. Translations are welcome. International submissions in English are welcome. We welcome simultaneous submissions, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Please only submit one piece at a time. Only previously unpublished work is considered.
