From the Editor
Welcome to Sketches Magazine — a new home for writers. Here at Sketches we value the craft of writing and we attempt to show it in the quality pieces we display. We are a quarterly magazine that embraces the burgeoning online world and does not view the internet as a threat to modern artists, but rather a useful tool that can be harnessed to showcase quality literature and further the careers of aspiring and accomplished writers alike. Because of the internet’s role in our daily lives we are an online magazine that reaches most of its readers by word of mouth; so spread the word! In the future, the magazine’s current issue will be displayed here on the Home page. We plan to have our debut issue up and running before spring! We accept submissions of fiction, creative non–fiction, and poetry from both new and emerging writers. We only retain the rights to publish your piece on this website. Writers retain full rights to their pieces and are free to submit them elsewhere even if they are published by us; just be sure to note that the piece was first published in Sketches Magazine. We do not currently have the resources to pay our writers, but we do offer them the opportunity to be published in a literary forum of the highest artistic quality. For a chance to be featured in our debut issue, please submit your work on our Submissions page. We do not ask any reading fee. We read pieces relatively quickly compared to many other magazines and in most cases you should have your piece read and returned within two months — and often times much quicker than that.
Submission
As our name suggests, we at Sketches value the art of composition. We pay particular attention to a work’s form and originality of design. We also acknowledge the value of a strong character and hope to connect with each one in a real and unique way. For us plot is secondary to great writing, but we always attempt to reward a masterfully thought–out story and we would never throw out a piece solely because it isn’t structurally groundbreaking. In short, we are open to anything and everything of high quality. Here are our general guidelines: Fiction — We accept any short story or short–short 7,000 words or below. There is no minimum word count for you flash–fiction enthusiasts! — Please limit yourself to two submissions per issue. — Please no genre fiction. Creative Non-fiction — We accept any creative non–fiction piece 7,000 words or below. There is no minimum word count. — Please limit yourself to two submissions per issue. — We emphasize the “creative” side more than the “non-fiction.” Send us great prose; whether or not it is factual is a matter for the historians. Poetry — Poems may be up to two pages in length with no word count limits. — You may submit up to five poems per issue. Please include all poems in one document.
