Information about your publication
Since its establishment in late 2013, the Penumbra Review has excitedly searched for the best of today’s untapped, catalytic voices. We appreciate the small things — run-of-the-mill and soft — made into items strange to the touch. We like the insides of folded hands, exposed and startled. We like newer writers and artists, the ones searching for a first home, but we also like experienced, long-established voices.
With its first issue boasting an acceptance rate of about 7%, Penumbra continues to search for the most compelling of today’s writing and art. In addition to showcasing powerful experimental work, we also add unique features to every issue we publish. For example, in our inaugural issue, we created a human voices feature, a collection of three pieces that seek to capture the limits (and lack thereof) of the human spirit. In future issues, we would like to continue this budding tradition, which will help to add exhilarating variety to each issue and connect riveting literature and art to the worlds they expose and explore.
So step forward and send us the very best you have to offer. We’re waiting.
Submissions
We would like exciting and experimental poetry, prose, art, and photography. However, if what you have doesn’t fit into the confines of those categories, we understand – we would hate to marginalize your work. Send us your lists, essays, plays, sculptures, and other things, so long as you believe they’ll stir something inside of us.
For poetry, we ask for nothing too long (although there is no specific line limit). Please, no poetry that rhymes (unless you believe it will work with us, and if so, please send it).
For prose, we like gritty. Moving. Dynamic. None of the old-fashioned clichés, please.
For art/photography, we want anything that makes us think. We enjoy strange, unsettling images, but we also like heart-warming, romantic things. If you think it will captivate us, we want to see it.
