Allium, A Journal of Poetry & Prose

About the Publication:
Allium, A Journal of Poetry & Prose is a multi-genre print and online journal published by Columbia College Chicago’s School of Communication and Culture. The journal publishes three issues each year: one print issue in the Spring and two online issues in Summer and Fall. Named after flowering plants that include hundreds of species, Allium plants vary dramatically in size, shape, and color, and naturally resist taxonomy. Similarly, the journal aspires to create this resistance by publishing diverse creative voices, both recognized and emerging writers, and a variety of forms and genres ranging from traditional to experimental.
The publication features fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction from a wide range of contributors. Recent issues have included works from notable writers such as Stuart Ross, Terence Winch, Michael Chang, Celene Chen, Wren Sager, and Brittany Ackerman. The journal also features book reviews, interviews with established writers, and multimedia content including video poems and readings. In 2024, Allium nominated several works for the Pushcart Prize, including poetry by Terence Winch and Zia Wang, fiction by Katie Altstadt and De’Andre Holmes, and creative nonfiction by Chelsey Clammer and Scott Hurd.
As a publication committed to literary innovation, Allium regularly hosts events such as issue release parties featuring contributors and established writers. The journal is a proud member of the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses and represents Columbia College Chicago’s commitment to supporting diverse literary voices and experimental forms.
Submissions
Allium, A Journal of Poetry & Prose seeks work where experimentation, innovation, and the future of writing meet. We publish three issues yearly (Spring, Summer, and Fall) and accept submissions in multiple genres. For poetry submissions, we request a maximum of five poems (up to seven total pages) with no more than one poem per page. For prose submissions, including fiction, creative nonfiction, craft essays, and hybrid works, we request a maximum of fifteen pages (3,750 words, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font).
We welcome traditional and experimental forms, diverse creative voices, and work from both established and emerging writers. We are particularly interested in work that resists easy categorization and pushes boundaries in form and content. We do not accept previously published work (including social media, blogs, personal websites) or AI-generated work. We consider simultaneous submissions but ask that authors notify us immediately if their work is accepted elsewhere. Columbia College Chicago students are encouraged to submit via their college email address.
Upcoming
Submissions for the upcoming issue will close on February 28, 2025. Allium hosts regular events, including their Spring Issue Release Party featuring Lisa Fishman and Allium contributors including Jaswinder Bolina, Jeff Hoffmann, Lor Clincy, and Steven Teref.
