From the Editor
Blue Monday Review strives to publish prose, poetry, and visual art that celebrates the literary genius of the late Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut was a man who knew how to craft great stories that celebrated truth and beauty while maintaining a sardonic wit that makes our hearts swell with bitterness and joy. If your work can stir up even a sliver of that feeling, we want to see it.
BMR is a triannual publication based in Kansas City, which is also a major focus for us. We publish at least one piece (words or images) from a KC-based creator in every issue. Our goal is to grow and enhance the writing community in our city by showcasing local authors and artists in our pages and in our local readings.
We also believe that, when used effectively, technology can elevate writing past the confines of the page. That’s why we run a monthly audio/video contest called the Storytime Challenge. This contest is geared toward flash fiction, excerpts, and poems that are better read aloud than on the page.
BMR accepts simultaneous submissions as well as reprints because we do not feel a publication credit nullifies the importance of a story. We look for work that highlights the peculiar and the off-center, but we also like serious get-up-and-go in our literature. Experimenting with the boundaries of form and genre is great, but your writing should engage us first. Don’t let your piece go off in the corner to mumble to itself unless you’ve made us want to follow and listen in.
Submissions
Fiction, Non-fiction, Poetry, Visual Art, Drama, and anything that doesn’t quite fit those genre categories. Also, work from Kansas City based writers and artists.
