Information about your publication |
The Driftless Review is published by Platteville Poets, Writers and Editors, LLC, an organization dedicated to showcasing the works of emerging and established writers whose creative journeys have in some way brought them through the Driftless Region: the distinctive landscape of rolling hills and river valleys which join southwest Wisconsin, southeast Minnesota, and northeast Iowa. While we do showcase local writers, we accept submissions from anyone. We are affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. |
What type of submissions are you looking for? |
In fiction, we look for well-wrought characters in situations that shed some new light on the human condition. Tight, clean, unassuming prose that mirrors our Midwestern sensibility. To compare it to another artistic medium, look for our aesthetic in a Grant Wood or Thomas Hart Benton painting. In poetry, we look for poems that feel and think simultaneously. We don?t care about the poet?s aesthetic allegiances as much as we care about the work?s human urgency. Think Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, and Ai-weiwei. |
Tell us about upcoming events or contests |
On June 1, our 1st annual Flash Fiction contest begins and runs until the end of the year. We have experience with this kind of contest as some of our staff (Bill Yazbec and Colin Lessig) have been integrally involved with one of the longest running flash fiction contests run by The Southeast Review in Florida. We expect a lot of entries and a difficult time for our judge, Elizabeth Stuckey-French to pick a winner because there is so much good work in the Driftless region and beyond. We plan to hold an official launch party in the fall at our home base in Platteville for aspiring authors that might have an interest in publishing in DR. We will publish our finalists and the winner of the Flash Fiction contest in our May 2014 issue. |
