From the Editor
Elegant Literature is a short fiction magazine and contest exclusive to new writers. We pay professional rates and help unpublished writers get their work into the world. We believe in helping aspiring writers break into the competitive fiction industry.
We’re the community to join if you are looking to start your writing journey and become a published author.
The current minimum payment rate for professional fiction markets is 8 cents per word. We want to reward new writers, so we pay our contributors 10c/word.
All we care about is getting new authors published, so we accept stories in all genres. We publish fantasy right alongside contemporary lit, romance next to horror.
That’s not typical for a fiction magazine, but we don’t want to be typical. We have hundreds of readers who agree with us… storycraft is more important than genre.
Every month we host contests with large payouts. University students with no publication history have won $20,000. Each month has a new, fun theme to challenge you to write something unique.
The best part is, professionals aren’t allowed to enter. If you are a new writer, your chances to win a huge literary award have never been better.
Our Mission is to help new talent go pro, award life-changing prize money, and promote fiction writers worldwide.
Submission
Submission Guidelines:
Anyone can submit work to the magazine. It’s free. We don’t believe publications should charge authors to be published. However, we have a specific submission process you must adhere to in order to have your work considered.
Our submissions window opens on the first and closes at midnight on the final day of each month, just like our contest. The theme of each issue of the magazine is the same as the contest. All submissions to the contest are also treated as submissions to the magazine and are eligible to be published. In fact, we highly recommend submitting your work to the contest, as you could win $20,000 in addition to publication.
If you cannot, or choose not to submit to the contest, you are welcome to submit your work directly to the magazine. You will not be eligible to win the prize, but nor will you have to pay any fees, and you have an equal chance to be selected for publication as any other story submitted throughout the month.

Upcoming
Each month we hold a contest based on a short fiction prompt. You write a wonderful story and enter the contest. We choose a winner who receives the twenty thousand dollar grand prize.
We also choose the best stories, pay the authors above-professional rates, and publish them in our magazine.
Anyone can submit work to the magazine for free, but you must be an Elegant+ Member to enter the contests and win the $20k. Membership is $10/month and includes over $250 in exclusive discounts from our partners like Scrivener, ProWritingAid, Novel Factory, and more.
The odds depend on the number of members who enter the contest, and the strength of their work. Don’t worry though, each month we increase the prize fund based on current membership, and will open more contest categories so the odds never get diluted.
Also, as our mission is to promote aspiring writers, we ask Pros not to enter.
