From the Editor
Empty Mirror was established in 2000 as a source of books and information on the Beat Generation and small-press poetry. Over time we broadened its scope. Empty Mirror relaunched in literary magazine format in 2012 and now publishes nonfiction on a variety of literary and art topics as well as poetry and art. EM is published every Friday.
From the site:
Established in May 2000 as a bookselling site specializing in collectible Beat Generation and small press poetry books, Empty Mirror soon morphed into a literary and arts site. In 2012, EM re-launched in weekly magazine format, publishing every Friday at midnight Pacific time.
While EM still includes information on the Beats, we’ve now expanded the conversation to other types of literature, film, music, and art.
Submissions
We publish nonfiction, poetry, and art.
Nonfiction: We’re quite open as to subject. (Special interests include art and literature outside the mainstream, the Beat Generation, Surrealism, and countercultural movements.)
Here are some types of work that we often publish.
–Criticism and essays on literary or art-related topics. For instance, essays about authors or artists, styles or periods, places, movements. Scholarly papers are sometimes accepted. We occasionally accept previously published nonfiction.
–Book reviews: poetry; literary fiction; art; literary criticism, biography, and history.
–Interviews: Conversations with artists, poets, and other people of note in the literary and arts community.
–Personal essays. We’d especially like to see those which deal with some connection to art or literature, or with cultural or societal issues.
Poetry: We’re not looking for any particular style. However, we are very open to experimental work. Visual poetry is also welcome. Please send 2-6 poems for consideration. We don’t accept previously published poetry.
Art: Style and medium are open with special interests in collage, mixed-media, and abstract work.
