From the Editor
Hakkyu, a name derived from the Japanese word meaning “to spread,” embodies our mission to amplify the voices of the young and emerging writers from all walks of life. We believe in the power of fresh perspectives and untold stories, and we are dedicated to providing a platform for these unique voices to be heard. Our team of passionate editors, though small in number, is united by a shared commitment to discovering and nurturing raw talent. We look beyond the superficial trappings of past experience or accolades, focusing solely on the strength and potential of the writing itself. We believe that great literature can come from anywhere and anyone, regardless of background or pedigree. To ensure that we remain true to our mission of inclusivity, we have intentionally designed our submission process to be as simple and accessible as possible. We do not require cover letters, as we believe they can be a barrier to entry for some writers. Instead, we ask for an author biography only after a publication has been confirmed, allowing the work to speak for itself. Our editors are based in Japan and the United States, bringing a diverse range of cultural perspectives to the table. Through our voluntary efforts, we strive to create a global community of writers and readers, united by a love of powerful storytelling and a desire to effect positive change in the world. As Hakkyu grows and evolves, we remain committed to our core values of empowerment, diversity, and authenticity. We will continue to seek out and champion the voices of the unheard and the underrepresented, providing a safe and supportive space for writers to express themselves freely and fearlessly. Through the power of the written word, we believe that we can break down barriers, challenge assumptions, and create a more empathetic and connected world. We invite you to join us on this journey, to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, and to help us spread the word of the young and new.
Submission
We are currently open for submissions for: Writers: Aged 16-21 Flash Fiction: 300-1000 words Short Stories: 1000-6000 words Nonfiction: 500-6000 words Poetry: Up to 3 poems Our Taste: Our taste in literature is unapologetically raw and honest. We crave the kind of writing that strips away the veneer of pretense and lays bare the unvarnished truth of the human experience. We want to read stories that grapple with the grit and grime of everyday life, that don’t shy away from the dark corners of the soul. We are drawn to voices that speak to the struggle, whether it’s the struggle to survive, to find meaning, or to connect with others in a world that can feel isolating and indifferent. We want to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, the profound in the mundane. We want writers who can make us see the world anew, who can find beauty and heartbreak in the most unexpected places. We want stories that reveal everything, that hold nothing back, that lay the author’s heart on the page for all to see. But we also appreciate the power of restraint, of what is left unsaid, of the spaces between the words that the reader must fill in with their own imagination. We are particularly interested in stories that explore the formative experiences of childhood, the way that our early years shape the people we become. We want to see the wounds that never quite heal, the joys that sustain us through the darkest times. We want to feel the weight of repressed emotions, the things that go unspoken but that lurk beneath the surface of every interaction. Ultimately, we want to read stories that grapple with the fundamental question of where we fit into this world. How do we find our place in a society that can feel hostile and uncaring? How do we create meaning and purpose in a universe that seems indifferent to our existence? These are the questions that drive us, that keep us up at night, that we hope to explore through the power of literature. At Hakkyu, we believe that everyone has a story to tell, and that every story has the power to change lives. We are committed to giving voice to the unheard, to shining a light on the marginalized and the forgotten. We want to create a community of writers and readers who believe in the transformative power of words, who are willing to confront the hard truths of the world in order to imagine a better one.
