From the Editor
The Hour of Lead is an online poetry magazine which aims to publish new issues on a quarterly basis – in reality we’ll publish every time we have sufficient good work to justify an issue, that’s the beauty (and flexibility) of online publishing. There are already quite a few good online poetry journals and magazines, but most of them are based in the USA. This one is based in Manchester, UK, but we’re happy to accept submissions from all over the world. Chiefly, we’re on the look out for new and interesting work. This can be writing that takes advantage of the new avenues of expression offered by digital platforms (we’re happy to embed YouTube/Soundcloud performances as opposed to simply text, for example), or simply a poem that does something surprising with a classic form. Put simply, we like what’s good. We like poetry of place, poetry that delights in uncovering new (or very old) words, poetry that shocks, poetry that makes us feel wistful, poetry that breaks boundaries. We’re web-based because 1. we can’t afford print, 2. we think that poetry in the UK is, on the whole, insufficiently engaged with the web, 3. we think that the internet and poetry could be very good for each other. If you’d like to submit, please send a friendly amount of poems (we have real jobs too, so please nothing gigantic unless you’re certain it’s the next V) to hourofleadpoetry@gmail.com.
Submissions
As we are an online magazine, we are particularly interested in submissions which utilise different forms of media that would be impossible to reproduce in print (for instance video, or sound recordings), however only if they complement or augment the writing. The poem is still key.
