From the Editor
Lucky Lizard Journal was founded in 2023 with the purpose of being a competitive, egalitarian poetry journal that allows any writer to submit (almost) any poem that they desire. The name and logo are inspired by the founder’s childhood toy lizard which he had named Lucky. In a world full of poetry that deserves to be read, it hopes to be able to showcase a wide variety that impresses audiences. Two times a year, the journal publishes an issue. Each issue has at least twenty poems, starting with issue 2 onward. Occasionally, a contest will be run, in which case, the 5 winners will be published alongside the regularly published poems. The contests are themed and require a small fee, but the prizes are monetary. Overall, the journal prides itself on not discriminating against any sort of poet or poem. As well as this, Lucky Lizard Journal nominates for the Pushcart Prize. The journal does accept simultaneous submissions. On the website, the following is stated: “This is a journal dedicated to the art of poetry in its entirety. We are looking for poetry that is traditional or contemporary, long or short, quirky or mature, anything and everything under the sun. But please, send only your best. Life is too short for the inadequate!” The website also says the following: “This journal prides itself on accepting work of any kind, any theme, any length, any style. We understand and appreciate the whole poetic landscape and will never discriminate against poetry or poets. We will try to best discriminate between the best works and the rest, though. It is a difficult task, but we hope that you can enjoy the final product: our Journal.” People are free to make donations to support the journal. The journal has an instagram page at @luckylizardjournal.
Submissions
We are looking for submissions that are carefully crafted and passionate. If you put ample energy and time into the poem and it is apparent, it has a good chance at making it with us. Write skillfully and articulately. Any poem of any length or genre will be accepted, besides the poems with more extreme natures that are not suitable for all audiences. You may submit epics or haikus, senryus or odes, anything goes. You can submit dark, horror poetry, or fun, fantastical poetry. You may submit nonsense poetry or serious, contemplative poetry. You have the freedom to present to us work that deserves to be called poetry. It is this sort of work that we want to display in our Journal. Rhyme is fun to see but it must be done well. Preferably shy away from political rants that demonize others. Consider ideas that have never been considered before, as well as ideas thought countless times already, but make it your own and draw us in with your art.
