From the Editor
Nat. Brut is an online multimedia art and literary magazine released free to the world twice a year. We aim to provide quality, engaging, dynamic, inspiring work from a wide array of genres and mediums in a way that values the potency and interconnectivity of these mediums, and to demonstrate balanced representation, especially among gender, in a way that allows all artists’ work to coexist fluidly. We also want to do all this while leaving the smallest possible carbon footprint. The latter is a pretty tall order, but we do our best by offering the magazine for free online, and when we do print anything, we try to do so as responsibly and sustainably as possible.
Submissions
In terms of what we’re willing to publish, the possibilities are vast. In our latest issue, we accepted flash fiction, short fiction, poetry, a one-act play, a short film, animation, humor pieces, an interview, and visual curations of photography and artwork made by prison inmates. There’s terror, absurdity, sadness, stuff we laugh at every time we read it, stuff we’re haunted by, and stuff we’re not even sure how we feel about. It’s difficult to sum up what we respond to, since we receive poetry, fiction, and visual art of all sorts. But the through-line seems to be a sense of human vulnerability – work that makes us feel connected to humanity in some unexpected way.
