From the Editor
NEAT. is an online literary magazine devoted to writers with ties to the Midwest. We (Elizabeth and TM) got together in the summer of July 2013 and decided we wanted to contribute to the literary scene and give Midwestern writers, like ourselves, an avenue for expression. NEAT. is what blossomed out of that discussion.
Each season, we send out a call for submissions that proposes a theme. Our reading period for a specific call usually lasts four months — then we close it for about two weeks to allow us to create the issue, at which time we reopen submissions for the next theme. What that basically means is that we’re always reading something – so send your work our way!
So far, we have had themes surrounding the seasons: summer vacation, the ending and beginning of fall, snow globe stories of winter, madness of spring, and hot desires of summer again. For the next four issues (Fall 2014 – Summer 2015) we are asking writers to conduct us a story to the tune of four musical movements. The first of these, for Fall 2014, is the nocturne. For more information, check out our submission guidelines. We accept fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, and we publish in PDF, MOBI, and EPUB formats available on our website.
We also have a Tumblr page (neatmag.tumblr.com) where we hope to post submitted photography and art. We will be posting weekly or daily, depending on submission count.
We take our whiskey — and our literature — neat. So grab a chair and a glass and join the discussion. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next issue.

**This is a magazine for writers and poets connected with the Midwest.**
NEAT. is now over a year old. We’ve gone through topics revolving around the seasons, and now we want to shake things up. We will be asking you to draw your inspiration from movements in music for the next few issues.
For fall, the theme is “Nocturne.” According to Dictionary.com, one of the definitions of “nocturne” is “an instrumental compositions of a dreamy or pensive character.”
Start conducting us a story.
We accept poetry, creative non-fiction, and fiction. Please check out our previous issues (neatmag.net/issues) to get a feel for what we like and will publish.
