Information about your publication: | Quartier Rouge is a quarterly online video literary journal, published by The Poetry Society of New York. |
What type of submissions are you looking for?: | What should I send you?: 1-2 video recordings of 1-2 poems, as well as the poem itself in a .doc/.pdf/.rtf document. The poetry must be your own, read by you, and sent via a YouTube/Vimeo/etc link. Please do not send the file itself, as it will not be considered. If your poem is accepted we will request the actual video file to upload onto Vimeo, YouTube, and the QR site. What sort of poetry should I send you? The poems that we want are those that touch our nerves and our hearts and make us want to throw our computers across the room because they’re so damn good. Poems that are aware of, instructed by, and in awe of what has come before them, both historically and in terms of literary tradition. Poems we like are often obsessed with myth, foreign languages, and our fathers. Poems that import and export imagery, but handle it carefully. We want to publish poets who are honest with themselves and the world about who they are, such that they can just as easily go with or without a mask.? There must be a brazenness about even the most quiet works.? Still, we don\’t want poetry that steps all over you.? It ought to step over you while you pretend to be asleep, so you can’t help but look up its skirt. Poems that take linguistic and personal risks feel more important to us. The ground covered by a poem willing to say, literally, anything in order to relay the poet\’s unique experience provide more, in our opinion, than poems that employ safe conventions and are only willing to exist within a accepted set of social morays. Fearlessness, in other words, or fearlessness imbued with sincere vulnerability, interests us deeply.? What should my video look like?: The focus should always be on you and your words, so avoid your cluttered, brightly lit bedroom, and any other such distracting scenery. Become the speaker in your poem. Talk to us from the depths of that person. Do they exist in that bedroom? Probably not. So, put yourself in scenery that helps tell us who they are and what they?re talking about. Draw the viewer in, as if they?re your best friend or your lover sitting across from you or lying beside you in a quiet room. As if we?ve found you in the middle of a deep conversation with this person and have now reached that point where the most important things are said. Be as creative as possible! And although our videos are currently all in one shot, don?t limit yourself if you or a friend wanna b-roll it up. What about sound?: Please make sure that your voice can be heard loudly and clearly, and that there?s no music or other sounds going on in the background. Does my poem have to be memorized?: No. However, your poem and video will be much stronger (more connective) if you HAVE memorized your poem. We strongly suggest you do. Where do I send my submission?: QRsubmissions[at]gmail.com |
Tell us about upcoming events or contests: | Our next issue, which will be released on Monday, March 26th, will be an exciting step for the journal because it will involve a LIVE component for its first week of release.? We are asking that our contributors make themselves available for live video poetry readings with paying “readers.”? We will provide each of our contributors with an email address @quartierrougerevue.com so that readers can contact them to set up reading times.? Then the poets can skype, facebook, or googlevideochat their “reader” after he or she pays a paypal invoice for a selected duration of time.? All poets will cost a $1 minute! |
