From the Editor
As a free-to-submit, free-to-listen literary quarterly dedicated solely to audio submissions, Stanza Cannon enhances humanity’s age-old tradition of oral poetry by utilizing the infinite reach of the ‘Net. The zine’s name was inspired by a Jules Feiffer illustration of a Norton Juster notion in The Phantom Tollbooth, where Milo loads a cannon with a single word that, after being fired, brings down the Soundkeeper’s fortress and releases all the horded sounds into the world. How like the unnatural silence haunting The Valley of Sound are the literary zines of the Internet? Why, with all the resources available to us, do we commit only the written word to digital memory? Stanza Cannon is here to change that, because so much more than words is said in the saying of a poem. We have listeners and contributors from across the globe, and we are excited to publish any and every voice with art to it. The EIC is a fan of open mics, poetry slams, book store recitals, poetry festivals, and everything in-between.
Submissions
What We Want Content Anything and everything, but it has to be good. What’s good? That will change per issue on the whims of our editors, but Stanza Cannon generally seeks and appreciates poems with imagination, passion, intelligence, guts, and/or wit. There’s no specific subject, theme, or tone we’re looking for (unless announced for special issues), so give us your best and don’t be afraid to test our boundaries! Stanza Cannon would love to publish the likes of which has yet to be blared from its pages. Time Limits There are no length/time limits, but the editors are not fond of epics unless they are top-notch, out-of-the-ballpark, emotionally haunting, world-illuminating works. Similarly, short-form and micro-poetry are considered only if astounding, and please follow the tradition of reciting the poem twice, with a decent (full 5-7 second) pause of silence in-between, if submitting recordings of haiku/senryu, couplets, etc. Stipulations: Only original works, those written/conceived of and performed by the author, will be considered. (Does not apply to assigned poems for The Grab Bag.) Simultaneous submissions are not currently accepted. (If the poem is submitted elsewhere in written form but not as an audio file, it is not considered a simultaneous submission and will be considered.) Previously published poems are eligible for publication so long as you inform the editors where the works appeared originally so Stanza Cannon can provide due credit. Stanza Cannon does not tolerate hate speech: words that demean, degrade, or insult individuals or groups, and the editors will not consider any lines that aim to inspire violence toward others. Any submissions containing licensed music – original or otherwise – in any degree will not be considered. At this time, there is no compensation for publication other than amplification and bragging rights. (Hopefully this will change soon.) Please submit only once per issue. If we decide to pass on your poems for one particular issue, they may be better suited for another issue or another publication.
Other
The Grab Bag is a separate section of Stanza Cannon that lets authors learn a lot about their own work from how others interact with it via their recitations. Reading someone else’s poetry aloud also allows readers to step out of their own head/throat to challenge how and what they communicate. And listeners expand their own comprehension of the poems from being able to hear two different takes on the same arrangement of words. Through the megaphone that is Stanza Cannon, imagine the sympathy we can drive by sharing poems in different voices across the world instead of one voice in one geographically isolated performance space. The digital world is truly our stage, and we’re seeking orators: https://stanzacannon.com/grab-bag.
