From the Editor
An interactive quarterly multi-cultural literary children’s magazine. The magazine was created to help black children have positive images whilst living with a racially hostile environment. It was designed for all children, but especially ours. This magazine founded the black children’s literature canon. Our centennial is in January, and we will re-issue with a modern take on heritage and pride, global citizen, reading as a interactive and social activity, and just an enjoyable entertainment experience for children that inspires them to be themselves, constantly learn and grow, and to celebrate our differences not demonize.
Submissions
We are looking for three types of short story content. Long form 3-3.5k words, medium 1-1.5K words, short short 500 words, poems, and comics. We would like tales of triumph, of simple courage, that are futuristic, informational, self-esteem building, inspiring, quirky, odd-ball, non-traditional, and even real stories. We are OPEN to all kinds of stories because we want to bring children’s content into the 21st century. Our children are dealing with a rising nationalism in a quickly diversifying country, failing climate, failing schools, deep re-erupting racial tensions, school violence, high stress and anxiety levels. Our children are having mental health crises at alarming rates. We want this magazine to be a tool and respite from a literary world. We want to teach and entertain. We want to inspire children to be kind, supportive, and strong enough to envision a world and create it.
